The National Art School is an independent higher education institution acknowledged nationally and internationally as a centre of excellence for Fine Art education and research, scholarship and professional practice.
Originating in the early 1800’s the School has nurtured a community of artists which continues to contribute significantly to Australian art and culture including renowned alumni Charles Blackman OBE, John Coburn AM, Ken Done AM, Max Dupain OBE, Fiona Foley, James Gleeson AO, Fiona Hall, Robert Klippel AO, Colin Lanceley AO, Guy Maestri, Reg Mombassa, Susan Norrie OAM, Margaret Olley AC, John Olsen AO OBE, Thancoupie AO and Guy Warren OAM.
NAS provides fully accredited degree courses that embody the School’s educational philosophy of studio-based learning supported by core study in Drawing and Art History & Theory. These include the Bachelor of Fine Art, Bachelor of Fine Art (Honours) and Master of Fine Art (by Research) with majors in Ceramics, Drawing (Honours and MFA only), Painting, Photography, Printmaking and Sculpture.
A comprehensive range of short courses are also offered throughout the year for all levels of skill in Ceramics, Drawing, Painting, Photography, Printmaking and Sculpture. NAS short courses are endorsed by the NSW Teachers Institute and therefore contribute to meeting professional development requirements.
